Comprehension

Reading with your child at home is one of the most valuable ways to support their learning. While reading fluently is important, developing reading comprehension helps children understand, interpret and think more deeply about what they are reading.
To support comprehension, encourage your child to talk about the text before, during and after reading. Ask simple questions about the characters, events, settings and key information, and encourage them to explain their ideas using evidence from the story or text. Discussing new vocabulary and making links to their own experiences can also help deepen understanding.
The attached comprehension prompts and questions are designed to help guide these conversations and develop your child’s confidence as a reader. By regularly discussing books together, you will help your child build the skills needed to become a thoughtful, independent and successful reader.
